Our Race to Zero: The Calisen Sustainability Report 2024
Because smarter is always the right answer.
At Calisen, we’re committed to making a lasting positive impact on the world around us, helping homes, businesses and public sector organisations access smart technology that saves money, energy and time, and building a cleaner, greener future for our people, our communities and the environment.
So, for this year’s Net Zero Week, we’re proud to share our 2024 Sustainability Report.
As the Calisen Group continues to evolve, so too does our commitment to sustainability. Far more than a corporate responsibility, our sustainability agenda is the core of who we are and how we operate – a dynamic framework that adapts as our business expands and the world around us changes.
With strong internal alignment across teams, clear and measurable progress benchmarks and a practical, people-first mindset, the action we take not only helps reduce carbon emissions but creates real, tangible value for the communities we serve, our partners and the planet.
With every step forward, we remain focused on our purpose: delivering smarter energy for all and accelerating the transition to a net-zero future.
Taken from the report, here are some highlights from our year:
- We continued our leadership position in smart meter installations, investing over £350 million into mass adoption smart energy technology and expanding this pioneering expertise with international energy smart metering in Germany, alongside our partners at Octopus Energy.
- We developed our Plug me in brand into a full-service clean tech solutions provider covering EV chargers, solar PV, heat pumps and battery systems. We scaled fast to meet demand from homes, businesses and social housing providers who need affordable, measurable and easy-to-deploy climate tech – helping more customers take control of their energy use, cut emissions and reduce costs.
- Through our Advizzo brand, we continued to reduce water and energy consumption and drive real, sustainable change, helping more than 3.7 million people save water through data-led insights, improving customer trust and transparency, and helping utilities meet regulatory goals through smart meter data and personalised insights.
- We launched our internal People Promise strategy to help shape and improve our culture, becoming a Real Living Wage employer, improving our Family Friendly policies, strengthening our focus on health, safety and wellbeing and investing substantially in our Equity, Diversity & Inclusion programme to ensure every colleague feels seen, supported and able to thrive – also launching four new employee resource groups and updating our policies for greater gender inclusivity.
- We made further progress toward our ESG goals, making 20% of our white fleet electric, diverting 36 tonnes of waste from landfill, welcoming 166 new suppliers with carbon reduction and collaboration in mind, seeing a 37% improvement in Lost Time Accidents, supporting national initiatives like the Great British Spring Clean and Eco-Schools and becoming the headline partner and principal sponsor for Wigan Athletic Women.
- We opened our new Wigan offices at Mill One – a restored heritage building and central feature of the transformative Cotton Works development – part of a £250 million master plan to revitalise the 17-acre Eckersley Mill site as a new urban destination for the community. Built for the future, the space uses natural materials which are minimum 99% recyclable and contain recycled content, including locally manufactured acoustic panels made from recycled PET bottles, and is equipped with air source heat pumps and solar panels.
- We launched the Calisen Impact Charitable Trust, a registered charity in England and Wales and the central space for our charitable aims and activities. Through the Trust, we support the people and communities we serve with donations from the Calisen Impact ESG budget, sponsored activities and/or direct contributions from Calisen colleagues awarded as grants to eligible charities across the UK whose objectives align with our own.
Speaking about the launch of our 2024 Sustainability Report, Calisen’s Director of Risk and Sustainability, Helen Woodcock said:
“I’m incredibly proud to launch our latest Sustainability Report – a reflection of the progress we’ve made and the growing ambition that drives us forward. This isn’t just a report; it’s a statement of intent and a showcase of the positive impact we’re delivering through the collective efforts of our people and partners.
“While we know there’s always more to do, this marks an important milestone in our journey towards a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future. I’d like to thank everyone who’s played a part in getting us to this point, and I’m excited for the opportunities ahead as we continue to raise the bar.”
Calisen are proud to be helping to shape a smarter, fairer, more sustainable future for all – not just today, but for the generations to come.
