A Day in the Life of our Engineers
At Calisen, we’re proud of the people who keep our services running smoothly every day - and many of them are out in the field, working directly with customers and infrastructure.
But what does a typical day really look like for one of our engineers? Through our Day in the Life initiative, we’re giving our office-based colleagues the opportunity to step into that world, experiencing first-hand the challenges, responsibilities and rewards that come with the role.
Bringing roles to life
The initiative invites colleagues to shadow both a MOP Operative and a Smart 360/DR Operative, observing real jobs in real environments.
No two days are the same. From installations and commissioning to meter readings and unexpected challenges, participants gain genuine insight into how our engineers operate and the expertise required to deliver for our customers.
For many, it’s a perspective that can’t be gained from behind a desk.
“My time with Ryan was incredibly insightful. It gave me a much clearer understanding of the day-to-day challenges engineers face in the field.”
Seeing the bigger picture
One of the biggest benefits of the programme is helping colleagues understand how their work connects to the wider business.
By seeing systems, processes and customer interactions in action, participants can better appreciate how their role contributes to the overall service we deliver.
“I feel I have genuinely benefitted from this experience… it provides a clearer understanding of the operational challenges engineers face.”
The human side of engineering
Beyond the technical skills, shadowing reveals the human side of the role. Engineers are not only responsible for installations and safety checks, but also for guiding and reassuring customers, often in unfamiliar or challenging situations.
“Ryan’s patience with customers was outstanding. He took the time to explain everything clearly and made sure they felt confident throughout.”
Strengthening our One Team culture
While the initiative benefits office-based colleagues, it’s equally valuable for our engineers.
By building stronger connections between teams, it helps break down barriers and foster a shared understanding of challenges and priorities across the business. As one of our engineers, Ryan, Dual Fuel Meter Installer, explained:
“The Day in the Life project allows office staff to gain insight into an engineer's day-to-day responsibilities and challenges. This experience benefits them by allowing them to see their role in action, in the field.
This improves understanding and could help them develop their own roles by seeing the obstacles we face daily.
As an engineer, I believe this will improve service through better communication and a greater understanding of my role. It’s also been great to put faces to people I’ve worked with for a long time without ever meeting.”
Building for the future
Initiatives like this aren’t just about learning, they’re about continuous improvement.
By sharing knowledge, building empathy and strengthening communication, we’re creating a more connected organisation. One that’s better equipped to deliver for our customers today and in the future.
